Transcriptions: West African Drumming

During the summer of 2001 I travelled to Ghana for two months to study rhythm. With the help of master drummer C.K. Ladzekpo, from UC Berkeley, I found my way into the Ghanaian National Ballet Company where I took daily drum lessons with a champion name Prosper, one of the head drummers of the troop.

Inspired in part by these rhythms, I composed a number of pieces for an ensemble of Ghanaian-style double bells. My people and I have used these pieces in anti-war protests held in San Francisco in January and Februrary of 2003. Here are a few:
